How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs
Published on June 12, 2025
Tired of painful bumps and trapped hairs? Discover the professional secrets to preventing and treating ingrown hairs for a flawlessly smooth finish.
We’ve all been there: you finally achieve the perfect wax, only for a few pesky, painful bumps to appear a week later. Ingrown hairs occur when a hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin rather than rising up from the follicle. While they are a common side effect of hair removal, they don't have to be a permanent part of your life.
Why Do Ingrown Hairs Happen?
Ingrowns usually happen for two reasons: either the hair is too weak to break through the surface of the skin, or the follicle is "clogged" by a buildup of dead skin cells. This is particularly common in areas with coarser hair, like the bikini line or a man’s beard area.
The Three-Step Prevention Plan
The secret to staying "bump-free" isn't what happens during your appointment—it’s the routine you maintain at home:
- 1. Consistency is Key: When you wax regularly (every 4–5 weeks), the hair becomes thinner and weaker. While this sounds like it would make ingrowns worse, a consistent waxing schedule actually helps the hair grow back in the same direction, making it less likely to get trapped.
- 2. Chemical vs. Physical Exfoliation: Physical scrubs (like sugar scrubs) are great for the legs, but for sensitive areas like the Brazilian, I recommend a chemical exfoliant containing Salicylic or Lactic acid. These gently dissolve the "glue" holding dead skin cells together without irritating the skin.
- 3. Hydrate the Skin Barrier: Dry skin is tough skin. If your skin is dehydrated, it acts like a thick leathery shield that hair can't penetrate. Using a daily body oil or professional-grade moisturizer keeps the skin soft and pliable.
What to Do If You Get a Bump
If an ingrown hair does appear, resist the urge to pick! Squeezing an ingrown hair can lead to scarring, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), or even infection. Instead, apply a warm compress for a few minutes to soften the skin and use a targeted "spot treatment" designed for ingrowns.
